The media hall monitors keep telling us that the Bari Weiss-run CBS Evening News is “MAGA-coded”. It isn’t, but this is the way they signal vice amongst themselves. The reality contains much more than meets the eye. Case in point, the Evening News’ blatant omission of new details in the Pawtucket mass shooting. The new details, specifically, are that the shooter was transgender, which casts Pawtucket as the latest in a string of trans-fueled mass shootings. CBS omitted the story in its entirety. Instead, they ran the start of the trial of the Georgia school shooter’s father. The best reporting out of Pawtucket came via NBC Nightly News, which reported the most salient details of that shooting and of the shooter’s identity. Authorities praising those heroes who took the shooter down. Emilie Ikeda reports tonight from Rhode Island. EMILIE IKEDA: Tonight video of the deadly shooting at a high school hockey game in Rhode Island showing players rushing off the ice (VIDEO SWIPE) and this critical angle capturing the moments as it unfolded. You can see a person putting someone who appears to be the suspected shooter in a chokehold. DONALD GREBIEN: Their courage undoubtedly prevented further loss and injury and we thank them for that. IKEDA: Police say 56-year-old Robert Dorgan, who also went by Roberta, shot and killed ex-wife Ronda Dorgan and son Aidan in the stands before pulling out a second gun and dying by suicide. One the suspect's daughters speaking to NBC affiliate WJAR. AMANDA: His whole adulthood he struggled with mental health issues. But when somebody doesn't want to get help, they won't. IKEDA: Court documents show Ronda Dorgan filed for divorce from Robert in 2020, citing “gender reassignment surgery, narcissistic and personality disorder traits”, which was crossed out and replaced with “irreconcilable differences”. Hours after witnessing her loved ones get shot, Amanda writing on GoFundMe, “our family has been forever changed”. Adding her younger siblings, including one playing in yesterday's game “are now facing the future without their parents and older brother.” Teams seen returning to the arena to collect equipment a day after the shooting. PLAYER: I was on the ice and I thought it was balloons at first. IKEDA: While people in the community showed their support placing hockey sticks on doorsteps and outside the arena.  Police do not think there was a confrontation right before the shooting that critically injured three people identified as the ex-wife's parents and a family friend. Tom. LLAMAS: All right, Emilie, we thank you. NBC didn’t shy away from mentioning that the shooter was transgender, had gone through an unspecified surgical process, and had presented with behavioral concerns. They didn’t bury that lede, as did ABC’s World News Tonight, which very softly waited until the end to deal with the fullness of the shooter’s identity. Below is that report as aired on Tuesday, February 17th, 2026 (click "expand" to view transcript): DAVID MUIR: We turn now to the horror at that ice rink in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Chilling new video tonight showing the moment those first shots were fired. Players on the ice and fans racing for cover. Authorities tonight now say it was a man who killed his ex-wife and adult son and critically wounded two members of his family. Here’s Stephanie Ramos. STEPHANIE RAMOS: Tonight, authorities in Pawtucket, Rhode Island say this video is evidence of a targeted attack. And the suspect who opened fire at this youth hockey game, 56-year-old Robert Dorgan, killed members of his own family. TINA GONCALVES: One of the victims is his ex-wife, Rhonda Dorgan, and also his son. Adult son Aidan Dorgan. RAMOS: They say Dorgan also shot and wounded two other relatives who were in the stands. Police looking at this video that appears to show a man in a white hat pulling a gun, moving through the crowd, then a struggle and another man appears to grab the suspect. Authorities crediting those brave bystanders who grabbed Dorgan, preventing more bloodshed. One of them, Michael Black, telling Boston’s station WCVB when he realized what was happening, he told his wife to run. MICHAEL BLACK: I stood on the bleachers and I saw the gun, and just you know, just grabbed -- went for the gun. And I got my hand caught. He was trying to pull the trigger and couldn't fire it. GONCALVES: At that time, the suspect did reach for a second firearm and he did inflict a self-inflicted gunshot wound which what he succumbed to on scene. RAMOS: After the shooting, a woman seen leaving the Pawtucket police station, telling our Boston affiliate WCVB she's the suspect's daughter. REPORTER: Any idea why he would have done this? DAUGHTER: He's sick. He’s very sick. RAMOS: Authorities say Dorgan also goes by Roberta Esposito, and had attended games in the past without any incidents. They're still searching for a motive. David, those two other relatives who were shot are still in critical condition. David. MUIR: Just a horrific story. Stephanie, thank you. To their credit, NBC and ABC both reported the shooter as being a man that also went by a woman’s name. In the recent past, there would’ve been some ambiguity as to how to proceed. Not this time, though. This was a little too much to handle for the new CBS, which seems to be reacting to the media hall monitors’ false and misleading “MAGA-coded” moniker. While there have been many substantive and welcome changes, it is clear that CBS isn’t even remotely right-wing. Any assertion to the contrary is nothing more than disinformation in service of narrative.
