‘Big Bang Theory’ Star Is an Undercover Angel for Families Struggling With Medical Debt
Some celebrities spend their riches on sports cars and mansions. But Big Bang Theory star Kunal Nayyar spends his on random strangers’ medical bills.
The actor recently admitted that he and his wife, Neha Kapur, enjoy browsing GoFundMe pages and anonymously making donations to people who are struggling with medical debts.
“Money has given me greater freedom, and the greatest gift is the ability to give back, to change people’s lives,” he told The i Paper in December. “We also support animal charities because we love dogs. But what I really love to do is go on GoFundMe at night and just pay random families’ medical bills. That’s my masked vigilante thing! So, no, money doesn’t feel like a burden. It feels like a grace from the universe.”
Kunal Nayyar Urges Fans to Give What They Can
After starring on Big Bang Theory as Raj Koothrappali for 12 years, Nayyar is rumored to be worth about $45 million, which makes him one of the highest-paid TV actors in history. According to Forbes, he was the third-highest paid TV actor in 2015 and 2018, tied with co-star Simon Helberg. During those years alone, he earned $20m and $23.5m.
The couple also makes donations to college scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. And while they understand that not everyone is in a position to give money, he hopes others will give whatever resources they can spare to others in need.
“Right now, people are not happy because we are all expecting someone else to be kind. We are expecting a president or a politician, some leader, to come and bring us world peace,” he added. “But there is no world peace if your neighbor comes to your door wanting some sugar for their tea, and you lock it against them and say, ‘Get away.’… No one is going to come and change the world for you. You have to do it for yourself.”
