Cody Johnson Proposed To His Wife, Brandi, At Texas Roadhouse: “I Could Not Wait To Make Her My Wife”
A Texas love story for the ages. Cody Johnson met his wife Brandi when they were just teenagers, as he was 17 and she was 14. They first crossed paths at a Future Farmers of America event, and Cody was competing in bull riding.
They didn’t immediately start dating, though, and four years later, at a bar in Huntsville, Texas, where Cody performed all the time, he asked Brandi for her number and just month later, they moved in together.
Cody told Coyote Country the full story of how he proposed, and it’s as Texas as you can imagine… because it happened at Texas Roadhouse.
Cody had taken Brandi to the restaurant on their very first date, and he recalled being “so in love,” knowing he would eventually make her his wife. after one year to the date, he took her back to that same Texas Roadhouse, parked in the same exact spot, went to the same booth, and on their way out when they got back to his truck, he got down on one knee, and of course, she said yes:
“This might be really cheesy. I’ll tell you how I proposed to my wife. On our first date, I took her to a Texas Roadhouse here locally, and we sat in a booth and I was just so in love, and I could not wait to make her my wife.
A year later to the date, we parked in the same spot, went to the same booth, and when we walked back out to the truck to leave, I got on a knee and asked her to marry me, and it was pretty special.”
Of course, this was long before Johnson became the superstar he is today, and it’s a very sweet story and I can honestly say I’ve never heard another proposal story like it.
They got married in 2008, and Brandi was still in college, but she dropped out and worked two jobs to support them so Cody could continue to chase a country music career, and he credits her often for being the reason he was able to make the career that he has.
There were many times that she was the one who stopped him from quitting, and since their marriage in 2008, the Johnson’s have welcomed three children into their family, two girls, Clara Mae (2015) and Cori (2017), and a son named Jaycee Daniel Johnson who was born in October of last year.
His name was inspired by their family’s ranch, the same land Johnson hopes to pass down to Jaycee one day, which is really special. Cody and Brandi Johnson came up with the name Jaycee after many folks mispronounced their ranch’s brand, J Bar C Ranch, as JC, so they ran with it and came up with a name that I doubt they ever would have otherwise.
And in terms of how fatherhood is going for Johnson having a little boy after being a girl dad for so many years, he says it was a big adjustment:
“It was just crazy because, you know, when we had Clara in 2015, it was like that’s your first child, so you’re like all in. And then two years later, we had Cori, it’s just like, I just did all this. This was easy.
When you skip eight years and have a baby, I was like, so out of practice. I told my wife, I was like, ‘Look, nothing about me says comes equipped with instant maternal instincts. Help me.’ Yeah, I was out of practice.”
Despite being out of practice, it sounds like Johnson is having a blast with his son, saying that the way he interacts with him is very different from how he coddled his two little girls at this age.
“He’s fun, though, man. He smiles a lot. He giggles. I’ve got him to where—it’s really different because with my girls, it was always they were very snuggly with dad and ‘Oh, daddy’s beautiful little girl.’ And him, like the rougher I am with him the more he laughs. Like I can grab him by the feet and scare him, and he giggles and smiles. Then he gets with mom and is a little tiny baby, awe.”
It sounds like mom and dad have found a good balance between nature and nurture, and Jaycee is already showing he’s got some grit, which he will need as he grows up on their ranch and one day takes it over.
Brandi is briefly featured in the music video for CoJo’s “The Painter,” which you can watch below.
