Wild boar ran on car – driver convicted of hunting crime

One dark and rainy evening, a wild boar suddenly ran into Anneli's car and destroyed the front. Then the animal quickly disappeared from the scene. Some time later, a letter from the police says she is suspected of hunting offences.

It was in September that Anneli Kalander went to Storvreta on Route 290. When the visibility was poor and a roadwork was going on, she went slowly. Suddenly a wild boar appeared.

“In the corner of my eye, I see another wild boar coming running, so I’m staying. But the pig doesn't; it runs into the fog light of the car and pulls along the entire front. Then it runs on as if nothing happened. It didn't even slow down the momentum," she told Upsala Nya Tidning.

The fog light had been pressed and the plastic in the front crackled. Beyond three hairs stuck, there were no signs that the wild boar had been damaged in any way. The car was handed in at the workshop and after a few days the insurance company contacted us to ask where the police report is, something that is required to get money out on the insurance. Anneli then does one, which results in her receiving a letter from the police a couple of weeks later where she is called for questioning for suspected hunting offences.

Once there, she learns she should have called 112 so the animal could be traced. Anneli then explains that she would have called if an animal was injured but that she assumed that it was not needed in this case and that it had felt mean to the gamekeeper who had to go out and look for a wild boar that lacks three hairs.

Sentencing to fines

In the district court, there were no mitigating circumstances and went on the prosecutor's line. In December, Anneli Kalander was convicted of a misdemeanor of the Hunting Act with a penalty of 40 day fines, a total of SEK 17 000.

According to Magnus Jansson Klarin, press spokesperson at Uppsala police, as a motorist, you are obliged to keep track of laws. When it took ten days, he considers that one “rungust” has been “running”.

He also emphasizes that it is not possible to determine for himself whether the animal is injured or not without it being up to the gamekeeper to assess.
