U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday in the Oval Office that he ordered all business ties with Spain to be suspended.

The announcement came after the government in Madrid said no to allowing the United States to use Spanish bases in the country for military action in the Middle East.

Spain has been terrible. I told Scott to hijack all relations with Spain," Trump said, arguing likely at Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

He went on to claim that several European countries had met the United States, while Spain refused.

"All European nations paid 5 percent at my request, which they should do, and everyone was enthusiastic, Germany, everyone, and Spain didn't. And now Spain has actually said that we can't use their bases.

Trump simultaneously faded down Spain's announcement.

"It's OK, we can use their base if we want to, we can just fly in and use it, no one will tell us we can't use it," he said.

The background is that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the U.S. and Israel's attack on Iran as a one-sided military action. At the same time, the Government of Madrid has warned that efforts are contributing to a more uncertain and hostile world order.

Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares ruled in an interview with Telecinco that the bases should not be used for operations that go beyond the agreement one has with the United States.

I want to be very clear and very clear. The bases are not used – and will not be used – for something that is not in the agreement or that is not covered by the UN Charter.

Defence Secretary Margarita Robles also stresses that Spain is holding on to international law.

"There is an agreement with the United States on these bases, but our interpretation of the agreement is that operations must comply with international legal frameworks and that there must be international support for them," he said.
