Arcade Fire began as a collaborative project between singer and guitarist Win Butler and musician Régine Chassagne, artists whose backgrounds and influences would help shape the identity of one of the most acclaimed bands of the twenty-first century. Butler, who was born in California and raised partly in Texas, eventually relocated to Montreal, Quebec, where he attended McGill University. It was there that he met Chassagne, a Haitian-born Canadian musician whose wide-ranging musical interests matched Butler’s ambitions for a large ensemble driven by emotional songwriting and orchestral arrangements.
