“I’ve Done My Fair Share Of S*** Talkin'” – Miranda Lambert & Kacey Musgraves Seemingly End Longtime Feud As Fans Speculate A Collab Is On The Way

Please, let it be true… it looks like Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert are ready to bury the hatchet, and might have a very long-awaited (in my mind) collaboration coming. Of course, they’re two of the most successful mainstream country artists to come from Texas and really make it in Nashville in the last 10 to 20 years, but in fact, their families knew each other before either one of them ever cut their debut record. They actually have a lot of history, both being from small towns in Texas that weren’t too far apart, with Kacey being from Golden and Miranda being from Lindale. But there’s a reason they haven’t worked together in over a decade, and while I’ve always known they weren’t exactly besties, I really have stayed away from talking about it much simply because I did not want to believe it. Both of them were paramount to my life as a teenager, their music truly changed my life, and selfishly, I couldn’t square the fact that they didn’t get along and would never work together. Truly, I can’t put into words how much their lyrics and songs have meant to me over the years. Even before either one of them had any sort of success with their careers, their families even knew each other just from them being involved in music in Texas as teenagers, and Kacey often explains interview that her grandma was her first booking agent, and was never afraid to call up anyone in the Lone Star state and tell them her granddaughter needed to perform. But Mrs. Barbara also helped out a young Miranda back in the day, and was the reason Miranda ever tried out for Nashville Star, which ultimately landed her the first first record deal of her now-highly successful career. There’s lore that their beef, for lack of a better word, started because of a little song called “Mama’s Broken Heart.” It was released as the fourth single from Lambert’s 2011 Four the Record album in 2013, and was written by Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally and of course, Kacey Musgraves. The song peaked at #2 on the U.S. Billboard Country Airplay chart and has since been certified 3× Platinum by the RIAA, which means it has moved over 1,960,000 units. But the story goes that Miranda really wanted the song, and Kacey was reluctant to give it up, clearly knowing that it was a hit. I’ve heard that Miranda asked Kacey at her wedding (or possibly rehearsal dinner, I don’t know which one it was honestly) to Blake Shelton in 2011. Because Miranda was the much bigger artist at the time, I’m sure Kacey realized, at least for the sake of her co-writers, the song would have more success if Miranda cut it, so she allegedly gave it up. Although, she does background vocals on it. But regardless, it became a hit, and the rest, as they say, is history. It would have been nearly impossible for Kacey to say now, especially considering the circumstances around which she was asked, if that story is completely true, and I imagine that might’ve led to some hard feelings. Or maybe it’s something completely different, I only have the very limited public rumors to go off of here… Nonetheless, “Mama’s Broken Heart” has become a defining anthem from that time in country music, and one of Miranda’s signature songs, though the original version is much different and slower and much more haunting. But with the promise of new music from Kacey on the horizon, the two girls have been going back and forth on Instagram, and it seems to be in a very playful way that hints at a duet, signaling the hopeful end of this years-long feud. In a post on her Instagram stories, Kacey shared a clip from Miranda’s 2013 speech at the CMA Awards, when she won Female Vocalist of the Year, a category Kacey was also nominated in. That same year, Kacey won the CMA Awards for New Artist of the Year, and they were both also nominated for Single of the Year and Song of the Year with the aforementioned “Mama’s Broken Heart.” And during the speech accepting her trophy for Female Vocalist of the Year, Miranda congratulated Kacey on her New Artist win, and it the camera panned to a young Kacey looking very much less than thrilled by that comment: “Kacey, congratulations on New Artist, that was awesome.” It led to an internet meme I still see online from time to time, and if you scroll to the second slide, you can see Kacey’s very funny reaction to that which I’m sure was because she was not happy with whatever had transpired that led up to this moment with Miranda and her song: View this post on Instagram And yesterday, Kacey shared the video on her Instagram stories, with a caption admitting she had been talking poorly about Miranda behind her back before this moment and show happened: “You knew I’d said some things about you.” Along with the “eye rolling” emoji: Miranda reposted Kacey’s story on her own Instagram stories this afternoon, saying the “s*** talking” has gone both ways: “Well I’ve done my fair share of s*** talkin’ too.” I have to imagine the playful nature of all of this means there’s a song coming, and those lines might even be lyrics from said song… Here’s to hoping this feud can finally be put to rest, because I have been waiting and wishing for this moment for years now, though I’ll be honest, I didn’t think it was likely to happen considering the aforementioned drama. If you want to talk about roman empires, this has been mine for years at this point. In many ways, they’re so similar, one would think Kacey and Miranda would be besties for so many reasons, but that just hasn’t been possible for years, and I am selfishly hoping my longtime dream might finally be fulfilled. You actually have no idea what this would mean to me… I don’t think I could even put it into words, but I will wear this (supposed) song out if this turns out to be what all of this means.
