We’ve Got A “Situation”: Sturgill Simpson Drops Trippy, Meme-Filled, Pro-Dance Music Video For Hit Song From ‘Mutiny After Midnight’

Shoutout to Sturgill Simpson/Johnny Blue Skies for sending us into the weekend with a digital version of “Situation.” Originally, fans of Sturgill Simpson and Johnny Blue Skies were patiently waiting for Mutiny After Midnight to release today – March 13. Not only that, they were preparing to listen via physical media, as the original announcement of the album said that fans would only be able to get their hands on vinyl, cassette and CDs – A.K.A. no digital or streaming option. That expectation changed when the Dread Pirate Johnny Blue Skies leaked his own album on YouTube a couple of weeks back. But in an interesting move, the artist formerly known as Sturgill Simpson took the project off the online site after it was up for about a week or so. In the week leading up to the actual release, fans had no way to listen to the album. That is unless they got their hands on a physical copy… or pirated it. Don’t judge me… Johnny Blue Skies actually encouraged people to do that. In a message the “Swamp of Sadness” singer shared earlier today, the whole leaked album thing was explained, and JBS instructed people to go out and buy (or like a pirate, steal) themselves a copy of Mutiny After Midnight: “We’ll probably put it on iTunes at some point. We’ll probably stream it (with bonus tracks) at some point. But the album is out in stores today. Go buy a physical copy… or don’t. Stream it illegally… or don’t. But as your attorney, I advise you to put the phone down, get out of the house, and go grab a copy and find a place to crank it with some friends or even strangers… you might even get laid. It’s all the same f***ing day man… so don’t let the bastards get ya down.” So it seemed like buying physical media or pirating were the only two options for listening… until Johnny Blue Skies hit everyone with yet another surprise release. In somewhat of a Friday news dump, Sturgill JBS shared a teaser (and then a link) on social media using a clip from the late 1970s sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati. The radio DJ from the program – fittingly named DJ Johnny Fever – hyped up a hit song, and viewers got to see it all play out through an old timey television. When the needle dropped on the vinyl, “Situation” from Mutiny After Midnight kicked in… along with a chaotic parade of dancing clips and memes. Some notable moments in the official music video include: -He-Man meme that was previously used as a teaser (0:37) -Cybergoth Dance Party (1:16) -Napoleon Dynamite routine (1:29) -Pulp Fiction boogie (2:11) -Tyler Childers breaking it down (2:18) -Austin Powers (2:45) -The iconic Spider Man street dancing scene (3:18) -Music break to remind everyone that Johnny Blue Skies is HIM (3:36) I don’t want to pick favorites, but the Tyler Childers cameo was probably the best part about it. If you are confused by all of this, the music video basically consists of every single dancing meme that’s ever existed – and then some. Safe to say that all of the memes in the lead up to the album’s release make sense now. Well done Johnny Blue Skies, and to everyone else… enjoy bumping “Situation” and busting a move this weekend: “Situation” by Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds The post We’ve Got A “Situation”: Sturgill Simpson Drops Trippy, Meme-Filled, Pro-Dance Music Video For Hit Song From ‘Mutiny After Midnight’ first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
