Born Ronald Wycherley in April 1940, Billy Fury studied piano before his teenage years and had his first guitar by age 14. In 1955, he fronted his own group while also working full-time on a tugboat and later as a docker. A talent contest victory helped push him further toward music, and by 1958, he was writing his own songs.
