Getting Gary to star as Gary. Stephen Wilson Jr. is bringing his latest single to life with a star-studded visual. Since the release of “Gary,” fans have been unable to get enough of the blue-collar/anti-AI tune. “Gary” almost acts as the next step in Wilson Jr.’s musical journey, and the track lays out a very fitting concept for the 46-year-old country singer’s brand. He’s the type of guy who gets things done, even long before he entered into his music career (he used to be a scientist). And his latest release is a tribute to those types of people… who may or may not specifically be named Gary: “Gary: Garis mechanicus. Our Garys are going extinct, I fear. Much like the polar glare. I believe we need to save them. It’s gonna be a Gary scary world without them. Where I come from, the Garys get it done, and when your septic tank blows, I do not believe AI will show, but I believe a guy will… and there’s a good chance his name’s gonna be: Gary” Wilson Jr. has explained that the idea for the song came to him during a drive, as he passed a memorial sign for a pre-teen that happened to be named Gary who had passed away. It struck him in that moment that there aren’t a lot of people being named Gary these days, and that thought right there basically birthed the song. It also reminded him of all the Garys he had come across in his life, and how they all seemed to have a through line… blue collar types who were handy, helpful, and honest. Stephen Wilson Jr. painted a very vivid picture of who Gary is through the lyrics, and now the official music video brings them to life even more. And who better to play Gary than a fellow Gary? In the video, Forrest Gump actor Gary Sinise portrayed the hard-working character. The casting for the role was flawless, and Sinise was happy to play the part when Wilson reached out to him to star in the video. “I heard Stephen’s song and loved it. Two weeks later, he reached out to me to be in the video. He’s got a great team, a great song, and it was a blast to work with them all on the video. And you know….there ain’t a lotta boys named Gary these days.” The story the video shares highlights a Gary who lives a very simple life. He goes to work, goes home, and works his tail off to make ends meet. As Gary grows tired of going through the motions and feeling like he’s not helping anyone or helping society better itself, he chooses to stop taking his medication, leading him to act out radically. Gary then robs a bank and, instead of taking the money for himself and starting a new life, gives all the stolen funds to his neighbors in the trailer park, hoping they will do something bigger with their time on Earth. The end of the video almost highlights the tune’s double meaning. Just as Wilson feels like we need to save the Garys of the world, the Gary that Sinise portrays feels as though he needs to help those around him. Everyone has a Gary looking out for them, and in turn, we need to look out for the Garys of the world.
