A judge has issued an arrest warrant for former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin after finding him in contempt of court and sentencing him to 60 days in jail for failing to produce financial records in a legal battle with his adopted son. Bevin, a Republican, served as governor from 2015 to 2019. According to the Kentucky Lantern, Bevin has repeatedly resisted orders to disclose personal financial information, as his son, now 19, alleges his parents abandoned him. “Your arrest warrant will be issued today,” Jefferson Family Court Judge Angela Johnson said, according to the outlet. He did not disclose his location. Bevin, at the hearing, interrupted the judge several times, seeking to correct her and arguing he was trying to provide the required information but needed more time to collect financial records. But Johnson told Bevin he had been asked repeatedly by the court to provide information commonly produced in family court cases where child support is at stake. “Every litigant in the commonwealth has to provide such information,” Johnson said to Bevin, who appeared to be attending from an office setting but didn’t say where he was. “I cannot treat Mr. Bevin or Mrs. Bevin any differently.” Glenna Bevin was not subject to the contempt order because she has provided financial information. It’s not clear when the arrest warrant would be served or when Bevin plans to return to Kentucky. He did not state where he was during Tuesday’s hearing. According to WLKY, Bevin wants the judge removed from the case. “In the divorce case with Bevin’s wife, their son, Jonah, filed a motion to get child support,” the outlet stated. Jonah reportedly accused the Bevins of physical and emotional abuse. He also accused the Bevins of abandoning him at a “Jamaican facility for troubled teens.” He alleged that the former Republican governor was hiding funds owed to him. According to Jonah’s lawyers, Matt Bevin’s arrest warrant still stands. They called his motion “an obvious tactic to avoid personal accountability.” They released a statement from Jonah to WLKY: “Matt Bevin says he cares about me. But a true father wouldn’t be fighting this hard not to help his own kid. “If he really cared, he would have brought me home when I was rescued from Jamaica. Instead I’m out here just trying to survive while he keeps playing games. “I just got denied an apartment because I don’t have the money for the security deposit. I’m close to having nowhere to go. Every day, I wake up worried about where I’m going to sleep and how I’m going to eat. I’m trying my best, but it feels like I’m on my own. “That hurts more than anything. It makes me feel like I never really mattered. I didn’t ask for any of this. I just want a safe place to live and a real chance to move forward. If he truly cares like he says, then he needs to show it.”
