Darius Rucker knew that it wasn’t going to take long for Luke Combs to go from opener to headliner. The country music star hailing from North Carolina burst onto the scene after his debut single, “Hurricane,” rocketed up the charts in 2016. It quickly reached No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, and stayed there for multiple weeks. The song, now 12x platinum, basically announced to the world that Luke Combs was here. Not only did “Hurricane” connect with country music fans… it caught the attention of some of the biggest stars that were already established in the genre. Darius Rucker remembers hearing it for the very first time, and he was so blown away by the song that he insisted they get Combs to come out on tour with him. Rucker recently told the story of how that all came to be while hosting on Absolute Radio Country (a British digital radio station). The “Come Back Song” singer was already sure that Combs was going to stick around in the country music world for a while, but once he saw him perform live, Rucker knew that Luke was destined to be a superstar: “I remember when Luke’s first single was out. I heard his new single, I said, ‘Hey man, let’s take this kid out for some shows.’ And he went out with us and we took him to Australia with us. He opens up for me, and I watch the whole show. He’s walking off the stage and I say to him, ‘Boy, your life is about to change.’ And I was right. It just took off. That tells you all you need to know about how the country music superstar carries himself, and how well he treats his colleagues in the industry. As Rucker said in the video, he was definitely right in telling Combs that his life was about to change. His debut album, This One’s For You, was a massive success (it stayed at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart for 50 straight weeks). By the time he released his second project, What You See is What You Get, in 2019, he had already reached country music superstardom. That was confirmed when he won the Entertainer of the Year award in back-to-back years in 2021 and 2022. Once “Hurricane” went out to the world, there was no stopping Luke Combs, and Darius Rucker recognized that right from the jump.
