“That’s Something I Know Nothing About” – Riley Green Says It Was A Real Challenge To Play A Former Navy SEAL With “Extreme PTSD”

Taking on a role completely outside of his comfort zone. Riley Green is set to make his acting debut on the Yellowstone spinoff Marshals this coming Sunday, April 19th, where he will appear alongside Luke Grimes, who plays star Kayce Dutton, as Kayce takes on a new role as a U.S. marshal in Montana following the death of his wife, Monica. Riley will appear in multiple episodes, playing a former Navy SEAL named Garrett, who arrives at the ranch, unexpectedly, hoping to lean on his friends Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) to help “put the demons of his past to rest.” This week, fans got their first official look at the kind of actor Riley is, as Marshals shared a clip teasing his first episode, where we see him appear at Kayce’s ranch, saying he just wanted to see an old Team’s buddy, though not everyone is convinced he has pure intentions. You see a montage of what looks like a very troubled character, and it appears as though Riley will also be performing as a clip of an unreleased song called “My Way,” which he’s releasing tomorrow, and you can hear playing in the background of the clip: View this post on Instagram Garrett deals with what Riley describes as “extreme PTSD” from his time in service, and during an interview with Military.com, Riley talked about how difficult it was to portray, because he really wanted to get it right. Of course, that’s something Riley says he knows “nothing about” beyond what he’s heard from friends that has served, making it an extreme challenge due to the sensitive nature of that topic specifically, especially for someone who has never acted before. You want to get that right, and Riley put a lot of effort into doing so: “That’s something I know nothing about beyond just relationships and friends that I’ve got that have served.” Riley says there were real Navy SEALs on set while they were filming, who helped with technical advising from a practical standpoint, but also provided personal insight to the actors, which Riley says was “extremely helpful”: “I think we were beyond fortunate that there were Navy SEALs on set that we could kind of lean into if we had questions. That was extremely helpful for me.” Riley is no stranger to weapons, he’s an avid hunter and outdoorsmen, but obviously the kinds of weapons they use in military and as Navy SEAL is a completely different thing, and Riley says he spent a ton of time practicing in between takes. He hopes that translates on screen for people who know what is really takes in military veterans: “They said you need to be able to do it without thinking about it, without looking at it. We might have a 30-minute break, and I’d be over there just constantly changing the magazine out, putting it back in. That’s what’s going to make it seem real to somebody who actually has been in that situation.” Riley also talked about how he felt pressure being the “new guy,” but his performance experience on stage definitely helped “When I go to a show, everybody’s there to see me. When you show up on a set… I’m not the guy. I’m like the new guy. There’s a pressure of, man, I’ve got to do my job right, or we’re all going to be here all day. When you’re on stage, you’ve got to be the happiest person in the room to be there. That level of performance definitely helped.” He’s used to playing himself, but he didn’t want to fans Riley Green on the show, he wanted them to see him character, Garrett. He will play at least the aforementioned “My Way” on the show, but that was more of a “tip of the cap” than a main focus with Garrett: “I didn’t want it to seem like it was just Riley Green on this show. I wanted to be the character Garrett.” Riley also wants fans to take away his, and the entire cast’s, appreciation for the military, adding that he knows there’s things so many of them go through we will “never be able to comprehend,” and he got just a small taste of it playing Garrett: “I think I speak for all the cast that we’re extremely appreciative of everybody who served in the military and the things that they go through that we probably will never… be able to comprehend. When you go, and you get to act on a show like this, it forces you to try to go there mentally.” In terms of whether or not he’ll be back for Season two… Riley says it’s not out of the question: “It’s possible that I could be back on the show. I had a great experience with it. It was a challenge…And something I’d like to explore and try to do more of.” Riley’s four-episode arc begins this Sunday with an episode titled “Blowback,” and airs at 8p.m. ET on CBS. Here’s the the studio teaser of “My Way”: You can watch his first full scene they’ve shared here: The full interview is available below.
