The Droptines Embrace The Ups & Downs Of The Human Experience With New Album, ‘Drought Flower’

The Droptines are the best band in music that nobody is talking about. Alright, that’s not quite true, but only because some people actually are talking about them. But still, they should be a household name in country music, if you ask me. Maybe that’ll be the case once their latest record has the chance to make its rounds. Hailing from the small Texas town of Concan, located about an hour and a half west of San Antonio, The Droptines are one of the most intriguing bands gaining momentum in country music right now, and they having a stellar catalog of original music to prove it. The five-piece country/rock outfit introduced themselves in 2019 via their self-titled EP and first release The Droptines in 2019, and followed that up with the aptly-titled Here’s 3 and 4 More EPs in 2021 and 2022 respectively, amidst a slew of singles. By the time their debut record The Droptines dropped in 2024, the band was already one of the buzzier names coming out of the Texas scene, and they’ve maintained that momentum ever since. Touring with the likes of Whiskey Myers and having opened for Turnpike Troubadours, The Droptines caught the attention of the industry’s movers and shakers, and they signed with Miranda Lambert and Jon Randall’s Big Loud Texas label in 2025, joining the likes of Dylan Gosset and Jake Worthington. Now, though, The Droptines have released their sophomore album and first on the Big Loud Texas label, and it is by far their best work yet. Which is saying something, because they don’t have a single weak link in their catalog. Titled Drought Flower, the band’s latest album released earlier this month features 11 killer tracks, 10 of which were penned by the band’s frontman and chief songwriter Conner Arthur, and the remaining song being a fitting cover of Mike McClure’s “Calling All Cars.” From a sonic standpoint, this record is a welcomed extension of the distinct DIY sound they’ve built thus far. With a distinct sound feels just as much at home in an old Texas dancehall as it does in a major city’s underground rock and roll scene, The Droptines are undeniably country, but the heavier guitar tones and gritty vocals from lead singer Conner Arthur give the band a harder edge. As a songwriter, Arthur’s lyricism often takes a unique perspective and cleverly utilizes words and phrases you don’t often hear in songs, adding another element to the band’s distinct nature. And on this album in particular, Arthur’s songwriting prowess is on full display. The band’s most cohesive project to date, Drought Flower capture’s life’s vicissitudes with descriptive lyricism and clever wordplay as Arthur urges the listener to find beauty in the struggle. Kicking the record off with a track that features up-and-comer Zandi Holup, the metaphor-laden “A Town Near You” finds a self-aware narrator grappling with the isolation that comes as a byproduct of their inability to stay in one place. With songs that run the gamut of country and rock and every sub-genre and scene in between, the band continues to through the record cover topics of grief, inadequacy, mortality, resilience, and more through the use of nature-centered imagery and metaphor as well as grandiose biblical allusions.
