Wynonna Judd Debuts Brand New Song, “Kentucky Queen,” At Stagecoach

One of Kentucky’s finest. The redheaded queen, Wynonna Judd, is still laying down heaters over 40 years into her career. The country music icon is getting back to her roots as a songwriter, and sharing what is on the horizon, for fans over the weekend in Indio, California. Country music fans flocked to the desert this weekend to see the country version of Coachella, Stagecoach. The stacked festival, taking place right after the massive two-weekend Coachella festival, features some of the best country music talent, from newcomers on the block to legends who helped shape the genre into what it is today. This year’s lineup featured Cody Johnson, Lainey Wilson, and Post Malone as the headliners. But that’s just where the fun gets started. Other artists set to take the stage over the weekend include the Red Clay Strays, Ella Langley, Riley Green, Journey, Brooks & Dunn, Hootie & the Blowfish, Treaty Oak Revival, Charles Wesley Godwin, Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters, Gavin Adcock, Wynonna Judd, Ole 60, Wyatt Flores, Braxton Keith, Ty Myers, Jake Worthington and more. The festival content has been top-notch, and for festival lovers like me who were not able to make it to the West Coast for the weekend, the livestream has been meeting my festival needs for the time being. It also allows home viewers to enjoy special concert moments, such as artists sharing their appreciation for their fans, telling a few stories, and debuting a new song or two. During Wynonna Judd’s set, she did just that and hit all three categories before singing a brand new song for fans called “Kentucky Queen.” This is the first solo new single in over five years. While many know that Wynonna has had a hard last few years following the death of her mother and musical partner from the ’80s super-duo, The Judds, Naomi Judd, it’s good to see that Wynonna’s creative juices are flowing again. The “Tell Me Why” singer shared with the crowd that her upbringing and how Naomi raised the “Kentucky Queen” standing before them inspired the song. “My name is Wynonna and I’m from Kentucky. I was raised in a holler on welfare by a single mama. So I wrote this next song, and it’s about to come out. So I hope that you’ll support it, so I can keep on keepin’ on. Here we go! Never sung it before in public!” Wynonna and her band then jumped into the song, and although it was her first time playing this song in public, it was well-rehearsed and perfect. Wynonna belts out the lines about how the Kentucky dirt, wind, and water shaped her from a wild child into a young adult who had big and crazy dreams. Wynonna then shifts the lyrics into how a life on the road and on stage shaped her, eventually making country music history and giving her the title of “Kentucky Queen.” “The road made me The road made me Like a mama with no shame made me The road made me Gave me a name Hi, I’m the Kentucky queen.”  Wynonna is THE Kentucky Queen. While she didn’t specify when this new tune is coming out, I am very excited to hear the studio version of this song soon and hope there are more new ones in the pipeline from Wy.
