Your newest judge on The Voice. Yesterday, Riley Green announced that he will be joining the show as judge on Season 30 of the reality singing competition show, where he will be joined by fellow judges Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine, and it’s not yet clear if John Legend will return as a judge for this next season. Riley shared the news on Instagram, along with a video of him listening to a voice note from Clarkson, where she welcomed him to the show. Kelly was a judge on Seasons 14 through 21, returned again for Season 23, and made another comeback during Season 29, and she is a fan-favorite and seems like she will be the one to beat… I mean, no one can sing like Clarkson and she has a ton of experience and insight to offer contestants. She did win a reality singing competition show herself, after all, when she was crowned the winner of the first season of American Idol in 2002. Kelly also sent Riley a special gift to welcome him to the show, in addition to saying she was a huge fan of his music, and she has covered his music on her daytime talk show The Kelly Clarkson Show several times. But of course, it is a competition and she told Riley that Team Kelly was ready to “whoop that a**”: “I am super stoked to coach alongside you. Welcome to The Voice. I was stoked whenever I heard you were gonna be a coach, because I’m actually a superfan of your music. You’re so good… I think you’re gonna need the practice, because Team Kelly’s gonna whoop that a**.” Riley’s new chair fittingly had duck calls draper over it, and he seemed quite comfortable, saying: “I could get used to this!” Season 29 of The Voice was actually a special season called “Battle of Champions,” where just three coaches (there’s usually four during a regular season) Clarkson, Levine and Legend, who have all won the show before, battled against each other. There is no official premiere date yet, but The Voice has historically aired in mid-to-late September after filming some in the summer, but we’ll have to wait and see when NBC announces an actual date. Riley of course recently made his debut on the CBS series Marshals, where he plays a complex character named Garrett, though the reality TV setting will obviously be very different. There have been a couple other country artist judges on The Voice over the years, notably Blake Shelton, who was an original judge on the show, as well as Reba. It’s something totally different than we’ve ever seen Riley do before, and it’s really cool that his career has grown so much to the point where he’s getting these kinds of opportunities. He will be on a national platform weekly, and it goes to show just how huge he’s gotten over the last several years. I guess we can call him Coach Riley now: “I guess y’all can start calling me coach.
