Riley Green Debuts Unreleased Heartbreaker, “Lookout Mountain,” From Upcoming Album, ‘That’s Just Me’

Giving fans a sneak preview of what’s to come in September. After years of being one of the most underrated artists in the mainstream, the last two years have been nothing short of a whirlwind for Riley Green. Though you can attribute some of that to Ella Langley, thanks to the success of their monster collaborations, “you look like you love me” and “Don’t Mind If I Do,” the Alabama native has launched himself into superstardom pretty handily on his own. Even ignoring “you look like you love me’s” massive success, Green has now scored back-to-back #1 singles on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart with the aforementioned “Don’t Mind If I Do” and his steamy, viral track, “Worst Way.” In case you were wondering just how rare that feat is, “Worst Way” became just the 39th song in the chart’s history (and the second in 13 years) to go #1 solely written by the artist who recorded the track. With “Don’t Mind If I Do” also going #1 just six months later, Green became the first artist since Taylor Swift to score back-to-back solo-written #1 hits on the chart. Couple all of the success in the studio with getting a nod as one of People’s “Sexiest Men Alive,” his recent acting debut on Taylor Sheridan’s Marshals and being named as a judge for season 30 of The Voice, Green has cemented himself as one of the biggest stars in the genre recently. Last week, the “Worst Way” singer would drop “Think As You Drunk,” which included a sample of Toby Keith’s 2005  hit, “As Good As I Once Was.” With the release of the new single, he’d also announce his fourth studio album, That’s Just Me, which releases Friday, September 18th. View this post on Instagram A day before the album’s announcement, Green would perform at the grand opening of Randy Owen’s (of Alabama) new performing arts center at Jacksonville State University, the Randy Owen Center for the Performing Arts. Here, he’d not only tease that a collaboration with the Alabama frontman may be coming on the new album, but he’d also debut a new song that will appear on That’s Just Me, titled “Lookout Mountain.” @jerrylscott Unreleased song by Riley Green……performed at the Randy Owen Center Wednesday night….. #lookoutmountain #instantclassic #countrymusicroyalty #countrymusic ♬ original sound – Jerry Scott Referencing the titular Lookout Mountain, which borders Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee, Green sets the scene of a heartbreak in the first verse. “From the top of Lookout Mountain, you can see Georgia-Alabama And all the way to the Carolina coast And that trail in Chattanooga was a hell of a place to lose her I spent all damn night watching her ghost” From there, he delivers a tried and true heartbreaker in the chorus. Putting a spin on Lookout Mountain itself, Green flips its name, instead telling the mountain (along with whiskey and loneliness) to look out as he reels from the loss of his lover in an undoubtedly classic hook. “So look out mountain, there she goes Where she stops nobody knows She might be halfway across the state And here she looks so close Look out heartbreak, here I come ‘Cause right now she’s on the run And over the edge is the only way around it So look out whiskey, look out lonely, look out mountain” It’s become more than apparent over the years that Green has really honed his craft as a songwriter. Though that’s not to say that his early hits weren’t good, there’s been a marginal improvement from album to album recently. “Lookout Mountain” is yet another prime example of this. It might not be a runaway hit upon the release of That’s Just Me, but something tells me this will be a fan-favorite for years to come.
