The Next Mamdani: Democrat Socialist Wins D.C. Democratic Mayoral Primary
This is the exact opposite of what kind of leadership Washington D.C. needs right now.
After two days of counting votes a winner has been declared in Washington D.C.’s mayoral race.
Democrat socialist Janeese Lewis George came out on top defeating her opponent Kenyan McDuffie.
CBS News reported more on the results of the mayoral race:
Janeese Lewis George has won the Democratic primary for mayor of Washington, D.C., CBS News has projected, putting the democratic socialist on track to lead local government in the nation’s capital — as President Trump warns a victory by Lewis George could lead him to take over the city.
Lewis George’s biggest rival, fellow District of Columbia Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, conceded defeat earlier Thursday, saying in a statement that he called Lewis George “to congratulate her on her victory and wish her success as she prepares for the general election.”
D.C. is a heavily Democratic city, so the primary contest, not the November election, is where the real competition lies.
A winner was not projected in Tuesday’s primary until Thursday afternoon.
This was the first time D.C. had used a ranked-choice system for primary voting. Under the system, primary voters could pick one candidate or rank some or all of them. Candidates were eliminated until a candidate received 50% of the vote. D.C. also has a system in which all registered voters are automatically mailed ballots, meaning many voters mailed in or dropped off their ballots.

The New York Times reported President Trump previously floated the idea of the Federal government taking back D.C. if George won:
During a recent White House interview, Mr. Trump threatened to tighten his grip on the city if Ms. Lewis George wins.
“Maybe we take back Washington and run it on a federal basis,” he said, alluding to how the district was run before Congress gave it considerable autonomy. “We won’t put up with it.”
Ms. Lewis George told reporters on election night Tuesday that the president’s words motivated Washingtonians to pay attention to the race and ultimately to vote. She said voters had told her, “If Trump doesn’t like you, I love you.”
Ms. Lewis George has said she would rescind the Metropolitan Police Department order that permits officers to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, share information with ICE and transfer detainees to ICE custody.
