Madonna Shares the Real Reason Her Biopic Fell Apart

The music of the 1980s was among the best ever to hit the airwaves. The decade gave birth to MTV, and those music videos changed everything. Artists pushed the limits of creativity and sometimes controversy, and captivated an entire generation. Among the most influential artists was Madonna Louise Ciccone. Madonna embodied the 1980s, and fans have waited for decades to learn all about her in a biopic. Unfortunately, according to the Material Girl, we may never see the movie come to fruition. Madonna Shared the Biopic Update in a New Interview Madonna told Interview Magazine she could not get the studio to go all in for her biopic. “I was supposed to make a movie about my life. I worked on my script for two years and spent two years at Universal Studios with the line producers doing budgeting and casting. We had a falling-out, me and Universal, regarding budget because I needed—I’ve had an extraordinary life. I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget. You know what I mean?” Madonna explained. She went on to explain that her life’s story isn’t meant for an indie film and needed to be taken seriously. “They couldn’t get their heads around it. I found a way to make it for less money in Serbia, but I don’t think they were into the idea of—I don’t know. Maybe they just didn’t believe in me. One of their first reactions was, ‘We don’t believe you’d stay in Serbia more than four days.’ And I said, “Did you read the script?” My whole life has been survival. I’m not going there for a holiday,” Madonna said. She added that Netflix had interest in a Madonna series after the biopic fell apart, but that didn’t come to fruition either. “But anyway, I was in limbo when that fell apart, and then Netflix reached out to make a series. That was a whole other long process, because I couldn’t use the script I had with Universal unless I bought it from them for an extortionist’s price, even though I wrote it. Don’t ask,” she added. So no movie for now, but Madonna’s working on new music and living life to the fullest. “Good thing I have another job because I need to work, I need to create. I need to do what I was put on this earth to do.” This story’s featured image is by Ron Galella/Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images
