‘Force to Be Reckoned With’: Behar, Hostin Cheer Democratic Socialists
In the wake of electoral victories for the Democratic Socialists of America in New York’s Democratic primaries, the ladies of ABC’s The View were bitterly split on what it meant for the future of their Democratic Party. The two of the more ecstatic co-hosts were Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin. The former mocked those who were “afraid of the term,” while the later celebrated and defended their extremism as “a force to be reckoned with.”
Behar opened the praise by touting how erudite New Yorkers supposedly were. “Obviously, New Yorkers aren't watching Fox constantly and so they're - and they're not afraid of the term democratic socialism,” she proclaimed.
She then proceeded to falsely suggest that first responder services, trash collection, and the Ponzi scheme known as Social Security were successful democratic socialist policies in action:
If I fall down, I want an ambulance. If my house is on fire, bring your hose. You know what I mean? (…) I'm not scared of the term. I think they're scared of the term in this country! But Social Security is a democratic socialism. Partly unemployment insurance is. The people who pick up your garbage, the people who take the fire out of your house. All of these are democratic socialism.
Joy Behar says she loves democratic socialism and falsely claims first responder services and garbage collection are democratic socialist policies in action, and praises the Ponzi scheme that is Social Security:

Behar’s comments about trash collection proved her ignorance and how she never lived outside New York City or other major city, since in most places private companies handled it. Not to mention the fact that fire fighting and EMTs were not socialist.
It became clear that Behar didn’t actually know who she was waving her pompoms around for, and that she was only doing it because they had a (D) at the end of their name.
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin was the one to embarrass Behar by getting her reaffirm that she wanted first responder services, then introduced her to one of the winning candidates, Darializa Avila Chevalier, who wanted to abolish the police and who attacked her favorite Democrats (Click “expand”):
FARAH GRIFFIN: So, you just talked about these goods and services. You want the police to come.
BEHAR: Yeah.
FARAH GRIFFIN: You want the fire department to come.
BEHAR: Yeah.
FARAH GRIFFIN: Well, one of your new candidates, [Darializa] Avila Chevalier, wants to abolish the police and all prisons. She was asked four times, 'how would you deal with someone who committed murder then? What is your plan?' And she dodged and didn't answer.
She tweeted that 'Obama is evil,' 'Biden is a rapist and a war criminal,' and 'bleep Kamala Harris.'
“I don't like the way she sounds at all,” Behar admitted before hedging, “Well, she's not the party. She's one person.”
Alyssa Farah Griffin points out that while Behar wants police to come help her, one of the democratic socialists wants to abolish all police. Behar doesn't seem to be aware of who she was supporting:

Farah Griffin tried to warn her co-hosts of the extremists they were cheering: “These candidates that were endorsed by DSA, the Democratic Socialists were extreme candidates. And I've seen this happen in my party where the extreme right-wing takes over and you can't get your party back.”
Up next was Hostin, who made it clear she loved the leftist extremism and declared it America’s cultural and political future. “I think that New York is the nation's cultural and political capital and that's just a fact. And the Democratic Socialists of America is a force to be reckoned with at this point,” she said.
Of course, Sunny Hostin is in full support of the left-wing extremism. She claims New York is America's "cultural and political capital" and praises the DSA as "a force to be reckoned with." She says it's time for the Dems to capitulate to the extremists wing:

The sparks really flew when independent co-host Sara Haines called out, Chevalier for going to a rally the day after October 7 and literally celebrating Hamas. Hostin tried to shame and bully Haines from going down that line of argument by suggesting she was wrongly portraying all critics of Israel as Jew haters.
Haines held her ground and pressed the point, Hostin relented quickly (Click “expand”):
HOSTIN: You’re not implying that being pro-Palestinian and --
FARAH GRIFFIN: There were pro-Hamas chants taking place at this rally.
HAINES: On October 8th, the only thing that happened is Israel had been attacked and people had been brutally murdered and raped. And so, on October 8th I don't think there needed to be rallies cheering on Hamas.
HOSTIN: You’re calling her an anti-Semite?
FARAH GRIFFIN: Oh, yes.
HAINES: I’m full-blown going to call her an anti-Semite. She would proudly call herself that, trust me.
HOSTIN: Okay.
HAINES: Dan Goldman who we just spoke about was refused coffee at a coffee shop because they said we don't want money from this individual American human showing up at a coffee shop, because they think it comes from AIPAC and Israel. When we start normalizing crazy conspiracy -
HOSTIN: Is Brad Lander an anti-Semite?
HAINES: I’m not - Just listen who I'm talking about.
Haines even had some rare praise for republicans when she noted, “one party is ousting anti-Semites, one is electing them.” And she threw Hostin’s own words about racism back in her face: “As you always say [gestures to Hostin], a racist doesn't say, ‘Hey, I'm a racist.’ They also don't say, ‘Hey, I'm an anti-Semite.’ Unless you’re this candidate.”
Sara Haines calls out Chevalier for cheering on Hamas on October 8. She calls out the Democrats for embracing antisemitism, Hostin is stunned by how willing Haines is. Hostin stares blankly when Haines talks about Hamas raping women:

Knowing Hostin was personal friends with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Farah Griffin noted that the Democratic Socialist candidates were calling for his ouster. Hostin didn’t respond.
For her part, moderator Whoopi Goldberg ran defense for the leftist extremists. She ignored their policies and suggested the criticism was about age. She whined that people used to call for young candidates, but now they're upset with young candidates. She demanded everyone "wait, let's see how they act" once elected.

As they were approaching a commercial break, Hostin tried to have the last word by bizarrely arguing that Mayor Mamdani helping to elect antisemites somehow meant he wasn’t an antisemite too:
I recall a lot of people were talking about Mamdani and what a terrible mayor he was going to be and what an antisemite he was. And he has proven to be quite the opposite. He's proven to be a kingmaker, a leader. Great for this city.
Hostin was smoking some pretty potent copium, but the segment proved how dangerous The View and ABC News were for pretending this was a "bona fide news program."

JOY BEHAR: Obviously, New Yorkers aren't watching Fox constantly and so they're - and they're not afraid of the term democratic socialism. If I fall down, I want an ambulance. If my house is on fire, bring your hose. You know what I mean?
We are looking --
[Applause]
I want -- I'm not scared of the term. I think they're scared of the term in this country! But Social Security is a democratic socialism. Partly unemployment insurance is. The people who pick up your garbage, the people who take the fire out of your house. All of these are democratic socialism.
And there is a major reaction formation going on if you see -- we'll see soon, we're talking about it later about Republican senators are turning, congressmen are turning on Trump and people have had it with this right-wing nasty politics that we've had to subject ourselves since this guy got into office!
[Applause]

ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: So, you just talked about these goods and services.
These were not people running on an affordability agenda. These were left-wing extremists that were elected last night at the expense of moderate Democrats.
So, a seat that you guys do need to win if you want to take back the House.
BEHAR: I don't like the way she sounds at all.
FARAH GRIFFIN: Well, that's what I'm saying.
BEHAR: Well, she's not the party. She's one person.
FARAH GRIFFIN: But that is the point. These candidates that were endorsed by DSA, the Democratic Socialists were extreme candidates. And I've seen this happen in my party where the extreme right-wing takes over and you can't get your party back.
I would warn you all this is very dangerous and it could risk you losing the House.
SUNNY HOSTIN: I disagree with that. You know, I think that New York is the nation's cultural and political capital and that's just a fact. And the Democratic Socialists of America is a force to be reckoned with at this point.
BEHAR: Yes.
[Applause]
HOSTIN: I really do believe that.
You mentioned these other candidates that won, but you didn't mention Brad Lander who ran on a Democratic Socialist platform. He ran on building more affordable housing, protecting reproductive fights, the fight to protect and stand up for the LGBTQ+ community. Medicare for all.
FARAH GRIFFIN: Who did he unseat though? Who did he beat?
HOSITN: [Stammers] He beat another Democrat.
FARAH GRIFFIN: He beat Dan Goldman -
HOSTIN: That's right!
FARAH GRIFFIN: - who led the impeachment against Donald Trump.
HOSTIN: Yes, but -
FARAH GRIFFIN: He took out a sitting progressive liberal who was a liberal hero two years ago, but because he believes in Israel's right to exist he lost his seat.
HOSTIN Because perhaps it's time for change. Perhaps it's time for change.
The Democratic Party for a very long time has been searching for an identity and I see a great parallel between -- to your point about the right. I see a great parallel between the rise of the Tea Party in 2009 as a rebuttal basically to President Obama's policies and the financial crisis and the -- and the Democratic Socialists of America's rise in 2016 in reaction to Donald Trump. In reaction to healthcare. In reaction to the lose of healthcare -
[Applause and crosstalk]
SARA HAINES: One thing I would say. I just read a fascinating article this morning and it was talking how one party is ousting anti-Semites, one is electing them. And I would say that this article raised great points. Avila Chevalie - how ever you say her name.
FARAH GRIFFIN: Chevalier
HAINES: She was at a pro-Palestine rally prompting Hamas and celebrating that on October 8 of 2023.
FARAH GRIFFIN: The day after.
HAINES: These people are not afraid to -- They don't only not denounce, they actually espouse these beliefs that everything Israel does has influenced our world.
BEHAR: That not going to fly in New York City!
HAINES: No, it is right now, actually.
He was refused coffee over someone saying.
FARAH GRIFFIN: His office was also vandalized with anti-Jewish slurs.
HAINES: Yes.
BEHAR: So, wait a minute. Wait a minute. One coffee shop is normalizing it?
HAINES: No. No.
FARAH GRIFFIN: His office was vandalized with anti-Semitic slurs in New York. Like, this is happening.
HAINES: So, one thing I would say the right is doing right, right now, the extreme right and extreme left are meeting about anti-Semitism. They hide under the cloak of ‘we’re criticizing Israel;’ which some people criticizing Israel are not anti-Semites, all anti-Semites criticize Israel and use it as cover.
As you always say [gestures to Hostin], a racist doesn't say, ‘Hey, I'm a racist.’ They also don't say, ‘Hey, I'm an anti-Semite.’ Unless you’re this candidate.
BEHAR: All of that does not bring down the cost of bread, which is what people are focused on!
HAINES: My point here is though, that's the mistake the Democrats are making. Affordability and the separation between the haves and have-nots, that is fair. All Americans want to be able to afford groceries and healthcare and have good education and all those things. That is not what these people are running on.
FARAH GRIFFIN: These same Democratic Socialists last night were literally chanting “you're next” at Hakeem Jeffries. They want to take Hakeem Jeffries out of the House of Representatives.
