Two people died, and nearly two dozen others sustained injuries after a coach bus overturned on the Long Island Expressway in New York. “Fire officials say 20 people were hurt in the crash, which happened just before midnight near exit 16 at Greenpoint Avenue,” NBC New York reports. “Royal Jordanian Airlines, which had 15 crew members on the bus bound for JFK Airport, said the injured are expected to survive,” it added. One of its crew members and the bus driver died. Royal Jordanian Airlines offered its condolences to their families. It also said it will continue to monitor the conditions of the people who were injured and help support them. The overnight crash caused major traffic backups on the busy Long Island Expressway. Officials said the bus first collided with two vehicles before hitting the center divider. Three other drivers involved in the crash were reported to be in stable condition. About two dozen passengers aboard the bus were transported to Bellevue Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Queens and Elmhurst Hospital Center to be evaluated for injuries. Sources say the deceased driver has seven prior arrests, including for burglary, sexual abuse and forcible touching. He was a registered level 2 sex offender. He had a valid driver’s license but had seven moving violations, although none while he was a professional driver. Among the violations were two for speeding, two for disobeying a traffic control device and one for dangerous driving. Eyewitness News reached out to his employer but we have not yet heard back. Royal Jordanian Airlines released a statement saying in part that it does not have full details yet and is actively monitoring and coordinating with authorities.
