New York County Under Health Advisory After Raw Sewage Discharges Into Hudson River

Westchester County in New York is under a health advisory because of untreated, raw sewage discharging into the Hudson River. A power outage at the Yonkers Joint Wastewater Treatment Plant caused untreated wastewater to discharge into the river on Friday. Health officials are advising against recreational activities in affected waters through the holiday weekend. A person could experience [gastrointestinal] symptoms if they consume the water. If they have an open wound, the wound could become infected,” Westchester County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler said. Because of the risk from the raw sewage, the county has closed the Philipse Manor Beach Club in Sleepy Hollow. “It’s definitely a danger, being in the water at this time. And it couldn’t come at a worse time, this weekend with the worst heat wave we’ve had in quite a while,” said Chris Cawley. “The water’s been smelling very, very terrible,” one individual said, according to the outlet. “New Yorkers should refrain from swimming or any other activity that involves the full immersion of the body under water at closed beaches. It is safe, however, to engage in other recreational activities which involve partial contact with the water such as boating, kayaking and fishing,” the Department of Health and Department of Environmental Conservation said in a statement, according to ABC7 New York. I’m sure that everyone’s very disappointed. But we want everyone to stay safe,” said Dr. Sherlita Amler, Westchester County health commissioner. The boat launch at JFK Marina in Yonkers was closed Friday, cutting off a popular access point for jet skiers. The water near the marina appeared visibly discolored. “I didn’t notice it at first, but once you get close to the water, you can. You can smell like a very nasty smell. Definitely, something spilled. You can tell,” said Andrew Bellantoni of the Yonkers Parks Department. Despite the advisory, some people were still on the water Friday morning in Sleepy Hollow, including kayakers using sail-equipped vessels.
