Lawrence O'Donnell: 'Graham Platner Would Probably Not Be Facing Any Problems At All' If He Was Republican

Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner is facing another wave of backlash after more sexual assault allegations came out from a Politico report on Monday. Since the report went viral, many prominent Democrats, including Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), have called for Platner’s withdrawal from the race. The liberal news hosts, including MS NOW’s Lawrence O’Donnell of The Last Word, have also received their marching orders from the DNC and predicted Platner will eventually drop out. But at the same time he spelled out doom for Platner, O’Donnell took the opportunity to indulge in his favorite hobby - bashing President Trump. “One of the big differences between the Democratic Party and Republican Party is on display in Maine tonight, where Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner is at the 'evaluating the path forward' stage of his campaign,” O’Donnell began the coverage, which lasted for a grand total of one minute and 38 seconds, buried deep within his opening monologue.  O’Donnell devoted only one sentence to the new allegations, which he sugarcoated as merely “sexual misconduct and aggression with a former girlfriend,” when the statements made by Jenny Racicot clearly described rape.      He moved on, predicting that Platner would follow Congressman Eric Swalwell’s example and drop out: When the then-Democratic frontrunner for governor in California, Eric Swalwell, issued a similar-style video statement saying he was going to spend some time with his family evaluating his candidacy, 48 hours later, he announced he was dropping out of the race. That's the normal schedule in these matters. No one can remember the last time a candidate announced he was evaluating the path forward, who then found a path forward for his candidacy.  But then O’Donnell immediately shifted to comparing Platner and Republicans, specifically Trump: Graham Platner would probably not be facing any problems at all in his party if he were a Republican nominee. . . no Republican Senators abandoned Donald Trump for the accusations E. Jean Carroll made against him.   In his desperation to smear Trump, O’Donnell equated the two very different cases. Racicot and Lyndsey Fifield both gave detailed accounts of their experiences with Platner, along with dates and contemporary messages with friends and acquaintances about their experiences with Platner. E. Jean Carroll had none of those, and Trump was never found guilty of rape, only liable by a heavily biased jury. Trump is no saint. But he never claimed to embody healthy masculinity like Platner did. Trump also never had the advantage of several friendly media broadcasts downplaying the wrongdoings he may or may not have done in his past. Every time a Trump allegation came up, no matter how unsubstantiated, the well-trained dogs in the liberal networks pounced. But on Democratic scandals, they sat on their haunches until the stories became too big to ignore, or their DNC handlers finally let them loose to further their own political goals. That's what he said tonight in a video statement after new allegations emerged today of sexual misconduct and aggression with a former girlfriend in Maine. This comes after many other scandalous revelations about the candidate.  When the then-Democratic frontrunner for governor in California, Eric Swalwell, issued a similar-style video statement saying he was going to spend some time with his family evaluating his candidacy, 48 hours later, he announced he was dropping out of the race.  That's the normal schedule in these matters. No one can remember the last time a candidate announced he was evaluating the path forward, who then found a path forward for his candidacy.  Graham Platner would probably not be facing any problems at all in his party if he were a Republican nominee.  Texas attorney general, candidate for Senate in Texas, was impeached by his own party in the Texas House of Representatives, and he has Donald Trump's full endorsement.  Democrats in Maine still have time to replace Graham Platner on the ballot, and now Democratic members of the United States Senate are abandoning his candidacy. But no Republican Senators abandoned Donald Trump for the accusations E. Jean Carroll made against him.
