Gonna get it straightened out. Country singer John Rich, who last month was appointed by President Donald Trump to serve as the Special Envoy for American Landowners, is vowing to help 76-year-old Tennessee farmer Wilson Perry Kirby after the IRS threatened to seize his property – over a mistake that THEY made. The whole thing started back in May 2022 when Kirby received an unexpected $20,000 payment from the IRS. The retired Montgomery County Highway Department worker from Coopertown, Tennessee knew that it was a mistake and attempted to return the money to the government – but unfortunately, he would learn the hard way that the IRS is impossible to deal with, even when you’re trying to give them money. Kirby enlisted an accountant to help him return the money, but instead the IRS began charging him interest on the $20,000 while also keeping his tax refund to pay for the interest that they claim he owes. Despite reaching out to US Senator Marsha Blackburn’s office for assistance, and being told that the matter was settled, Kirby continued to receive letters from the IRS threatening to seize his property if he didn’t pay $4,300 in interest, in addition to the $1,800 they’ve already seized from his tax refund. The frustrated farmer says he met with the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service in Nashville this month, but unsurprisingly they weren’t able to resolve the issue. And after speaking with (and receiving letters from) IRS employees all over the country trying to get things straightened out, Kirby says he has a simple request: “I wish they would get it straightened out. And get one person to work on it, instead of sending these letters from all over the United States.” Well it sounds like one person is going to be working on it: Country singer John Rich. Rich was recently appointed to the new position in the Trump administration to advocate for farmers, ranchers and private landowners against government overreach and outside interests that threaten private property rights…so it sounds like this is the perfect case for him to get involved. After being made aware of the case, Rich immediately asked for assistance getting in contact with Kirby: “Yea, this AIN’T happening…I’m all over this one. If any of my TN friends can connect me with this man, please put me in contact with him immediately. I’m overseas, but will drop a damn HAMMER on this situation as soon I can talk with him. Hit me in the comments if you know him.” And in a video posted to social media, Rich assured everyone outraged by the situation that he would make it right: “I just heard about Mr. Kirby, the farmer in Tennessee who the IRS is threatening to seize his property for him not making payments on a refund that he never asked for, nor was it his. According to the facts, that’s how I know them now. He tried to return the money and as we all know, sometimes the IRS just is a labyrinth of complexity. People can’t figure it out and so who knows why this has happened or got to the point it is, but I can tell you this, nobody’s seizing his farm, nobody’s taking Mr. Kirby’s farm. That is not going to happen, and he’s not paying that money.” He also highlighted just how frustrating it is to deal with the IRS, especially for older citizens who aren’t as technologically advanced: “He didn’t ask for the refund in the first place. He’s got a flip phone. If you saw the original video, he says, ‘Man, they said they’ve been texting me and telling me to hit this button.’ He goes, ‘I’ve got a flip phone.’ He’s in his late 70s. You know, these are the kinds of things that I think the Trump administration cares about, just regular citizens who are running into situations that are so maddening, nobody’s ever listened to them before, but I know that we’ve got senators looking at it, I’m looking at it, as Special Envoy for American Landowners through the White House. We’re going to figure it out. I intend on making contact with him today. I’ve reached out to all kinds of people in his area that will know how to find him, so when I talk to him, I’ll give you guys a report, but just rest assured, Mr. Kirby’s farm ain’t going anywhere. American citizens shouldn’t need help from the presidential administration or a US Senator to get the IRS to fix their mistake.
