The House Ethics Committee is recommending a censure of Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC), who is accused of sexually harassing two “young female staffers” in his office. In a 25-page report released on Monday, the committee said Edwards violated House Rules by “failing to adhere to the spirit of rules prohibiting sexual harassment of and unwanted advances to House staffers,” Axios noted. The report concluded that Edwards “violated the Code of Official Conduct by failing to act in a manner that reflects creditably upon the House.” According to Fox News congressional correspondent Bill Melugin, the investigation found that Edwards missed votes one evening to visit a female staffer’s house to “perform chores like yard work, decorate her Christmas tree, and pick her up and drop her off for events and activities with his driver.” “The committee found that Rep. Edwards showered the staffers with lavish gifts, brought them on trips, texted inappropriately, and apparently deleted text messages that the committee was unable to recover,” Melugin wrote. Edwards has denied wrongdoing in response to Axios’ previous reporting about his alleged misconduct, telling the The Assembly in May that the accusations were “horses***.” He told Axios he would “welcome any investigation.” Edwards also maintained that he was cooperating with the Ethics Committee. Ethics first launched a probe into Edwards on May 14 over allegations of sexual harassment and creating a “hostile work environment” “Specifically, the Committee found that Representative Edwards engaged in persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct towards two young female staffers. Edwards then encouraged the staffer to go out drinking with him on the evening of Dec. 18, according to two sources and text messages reviewed by Axios. Three sources said the staffer told them Edwards would often pressure her to take shots of liquor when they went out together. Edwards later annotated a printout of text messages he and the staffer exchanged early on the morning of Dec. 19 that he gave to the staffer with a hand-drawn red heart and a note, according to a photo of the printout reviewed by Axios,'” she added. Edwards told the committee he only commented on staffers’ clothing and said “it’s almost an insult if you don’t make some comment about [one another’s clothing],” according to the report. Other allegations include that Edwards “wrote poems for Staffer 2, including one that he read at her going away party in the congressional office accompanied by a slideshow, during which he cried.” “Several staffers present testified that they felt uncomfortable, and Representative Edwards acknowledged in his own testimony that he could tell the staff felt uncomfortable,” the report said.
