NEW YORK — Girl Scouts of the United States of America announced Tuesday two new badges intended to broaden participation among members from a wider range of cultural and religious backgrounds. The most prominent is the Merit Burka, awarded to girls who complete a short module on modest dress, public comportment, and the historical role of covering in various societies. “In the name of inclusivity, we are proud to announce our young girls can now earn a beautiful merit burka,” said spokesperson Ihaytha Joos. “Nothing says second-class citizen like forcing women to wear a burka.” The organization described the badge as optional and “celebratory.” Requirements include wearing the garment during one troop meeting, submitting a one-page reflection on “lived experience of visibility,” and participating in a discussion facilitated by a diversity consultant. A companion badge, Cultural Sensitivity in the Marketplace, covers cookie sales etiquette in neighborhoods where female vendors are customarily accompanied. Girl Scouts officials said the program responds to feedback from families who felt existing badges failed to reflect global realities. No existing outdoor, STEM, or civic badges will be retired. Not to be outdone, Boy Scouts of America introduced a Stoning Badge available to scouts who demonstrate “community accountability” after a Girl Scout is judged to have stepped out of line. The award is presented following a documented incident, a short written rationale, and approval by a unit committee. “These young women need to be taught a lesson,” said Eagle Scout Woo Minbeater. “Luckily we aren’t handing out beheading badges, yet.” BSA characterized the badge as a limited pilot confined to older youth and requiring adult supervision. Officials emphasized it is not a requirement for rank advancement and exists alongside longstanding programs in first aid, citizenship, and environmental science. Neither organization released participation projections. A joint statement noted both programs remain voluntary and that troops may opt out without penalty.
