WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Monday that Lake Michigan will henceforth be officially designated Lake Michelle Obama, citing what he described as a strong personal resemblance. “It reminds me so much of her,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “You look at it, you know. Big. Impressive. Limp. Very similar situation. Tremendous water.” The White House later released a short statement confirming the change and directing the Department of the Interior, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Coast Guard to begin updating maps, nautical charts, and highway signs “on an expedited basis.” No formal executive order was issued. Officials said the existing Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the Great Lakes Compact remain in force under the new name. The four states that border the lake — Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin — were not consulted in advance. A joint statement from the governors’ offices called the announcement “unexpected” and asked whether federal funds would be available for replacement signage at state parks and welcome centers. Michigan officials noted that the state’s own name would now appear on a lake named for someone else. Tourism boards along the shoreline said they were reviewing existing brochures. One Chicago-area official, speaking on background, observed that the lake’s temperature, depth, and shipping traffic were unchanged.
