According to National Police Chief Anders Thornberg, the escalating growth in criminal environments in recent years is due to various factors, one of which is migration. He describes the situation as extremely serious.
Thornberg participates in Folk och Försvar, which takes place this week, and talks about the serious situation Sweden is in with criminal gangs that have been allowed to grow stronger and in some cases have succeeded in infiltrating authorities and other institutions.
In the years 2020 and 2021, a total of close to 100 people were shot to death in our country. And yesterday another person was shot dead. The serious organized crime, firearm violence and bombings have become one of the main challenges for the Swedish police and the whole society, says the National Police Chief at the security conference People and Defense.

Thornberg points to an increased demand for drugs, technological development but also migration and lack of integration as some of the main reasons for the situation.
The situation is now extremely serious, warns Anders Thornberg, and in order to be able to effectively fight the gangs, he calls for several changes. Social services need to be strengthened and available around the clock in Sweden's 61 vulnerable areas, the assets of criminals must be able to be confiscated more easily, penalties must be sharpened for organized crimes and information must be easier to share between authorities.

He also believes that the police should not have to take care of mentally ill and drunk people and points out that the police last year went on 24,000 suicide alarms.
