NBC10 Boston published a report highlighting a migrant family from Haiti and their experience living in the Boston area. Wildande Joseph and her husband‚ with their two-year-old daughter‚ now live with a host family in Brookline after sleeping on the floor at Boston Logan International Airport. The family moved into Lisa Hillenbrand’s Brookline apartment. According to the outlet‚ the couple has received work permits‚ are taking English classes‚ and are searching for jobs. Hillenbrand raised eyebrows and sparked criticism for saying hosting the family is “like having your own personal chef.” Critics compared the living situation to modern-day slavery and indentured servitude. “This story is just ridiculous. The couple has their work permits and they’ve been taking English classes. They say they’re open to work anywhere to save money for their future. In the meantime‚ they’re enjoying their time with Hillenbrand‚ their new friend for life and their daughter’s new grandmother. “They are hardworking‚ they want to learn‚ they want to be successful‚ and I feel great helping and I get to understand the refugee crisis from the inside‚” said Hillenbrand. Hillenbrand is impressed by the number of people she’s met at the Brookline Town Hall meetings who’ve been stepping up and hosting families. Another family in in the city of Brookline received a call from Bay State Community Services (BSCS) in Quincy to house a illegal immigrant family. The BSCS website says that it furthers “its mission by partnering in a strength-based culture of recovery that affirms the principles of self-determination and individual dignity.” It does not appear to advertise services for migrants. The Immigrant Support Alliance also held a public meeting in January on how to host the illegal immigrants. A resources document for migrants who arrive in the state cites several different “Resettlement Agencies‚” however‚ research into several of these organizations’ websites revealed little information on how the hosting process takes place and if there are background checks for illegal immigrants who are go to resident homes. During August 2023 Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Governor Kim Driscoll urged residents to consider hosting illegal immigrants. “This is not a crisis that our family shelter system was designed to handle. For months now‚ the state government and our providers have been doing the work of stretching the system as far as it can safely go. But we really need to bring more people into this work to make it a true team effort‚” she said at the time. Migrants Dropped Off At Couple’s Home Within One Hour Of Signing Up To Become Host Family Colin and Jessica Stokes‚ the host family‚ said “they knew they had the means and wanted to step up‚” according to CBS News. “I have to get sheets on the beds. How many people are coming? Where are they from? What ages. We really knew nothing‚” Jessica said. “The need is so clearly overwhelming‚” Colin said. “The family of four‚ who didn’t want to go on camera‚ had been sleeping at Logan Airport. The parents and two kids journeyed from Chile to Texas then Massachusetts. And there are so many stories like it‚” the report said.
