38-Year-Old Lieutenant Collapses During Run‚ Passes Away
A National Guardsman died Monday afternoon after he collapsed during a morning group run at Fort Jackson.
Second Lt. Pascal Buma‚ 38‚ was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard and a Chaplain Basic Officer Leader Course student.
“It is with great sorrow that we mourn the loss of one of our own‚“ USA-IRL Commandant‚ Chaplain (COL) Louis DelTufo said in a statement.
“We ask for your prayers for the Family‚ fellow students and our staff here at the Institute‚” he added.
Buma was taken to a hospital‚ where he was later pronounced dead.

Stars and Stripes reports:
During a group run at about 6:44 a.m.‚ Buma fell back and passed out. He was breathing and had a pulse when on-site personnel with the training course called for emergency medical services‚ according to the readiness center.
When medical personnel arrived‚ they connected a heart monitor and performed CPR. Buma was taken to The Medical University of South Carolina‚ where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
This is the third death of a soldier since Oct. 1 that has occurred during on-duty sports‚ recreation and physical training‚ according to the readiness center. Since 2019‚ the average of such deaths has been one soldier a year.
