National Police Chief: Links between violent Islam and criminal gangs

During the Muslim riots that have been staged in various parts of the country during the Easter weekend, the police have observed that the Muslim perpetrators have been backed by well-known gang members. The authority is now investigating how far-reaching the cooperation is between these two groups.

- We suspect that those involved have links to criminal gangs, says Anders Thornberg.

This is a view shared by National Commander-in-Chief Jonas Hysing and Säpo, with whom the Police Authority is now cooperating in the investigation of the many crimes committed during the Muslim riots.

According to the Police Authority, the co-operation between Muslim fundamentalists and gang criminals can explain why so much of the violence and aggression has been directed at the police. Thornberg stated that he is now in talks with the public prosecutor to prosecute the gang criminals who have been identified as participants in the violence.

At the press conference, Jonas Hysing gave an overview of the personal and property damage that the Muslim riots have caused so far.

- In total, we have had 26 injured colleagues, 20 damaged or destroyed vehicles and 14 injured from the public.

He further stated that an average of 200 perpetrators of violence took part in each of the riots where pro-violence Muslims in the local community and gang criminals did something in common.

- These are extremely serious crimes against our society, stated Anders Thornberg but had no further information on how the police's work can be changed and improved in the future to avoid a recurrence of the Easter weekend scandal scenes.
