Before the term robot was coined‚ mechanical machines and/or devices were referred to as automaton or automata. Religious automata have been used for centuries to sway public perception and opinion into a doctrine or other they might not have chosen if it hadn’t been for the ‘miracles’ people witnessed being performed by said automata.
