"Massachusetts State Police troopers continue their patrols on beaches to make sure people behave, but religious leaders are asking Gov. Charlie Baker and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu to create more jobs for young people.
"You have a city where young folks are struggling to get a job for the summer. You have a city where opportunities are not what they should be, " said the Rev. Miniard Culpepper, of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
But the big question still remains: Why are hundreds of young people using city beaches to gather at night in a way law enforcement had not seen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic?
"Our entire world has reopened and people are looking for opportunities and for social interaction," said Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden. "It's very easy for us to say that this is all about COVID, but we really just don't know."
