A record number of foreign-born people vote in the election - over one million

In this year's election, they are hundreds of thousands more than in 2018 and get to vote for the first time, and it is a group of voters who often vote for the left.

The proportion of first-time voters with a foreign background has almost doubled in the last 20 years, from twelve per cent in 2002 to 23 per cent in the election this autumn, according to preliminary figures from Statistics Sweden.

Almost 1.2 million eligible voters this year were born in another country - 200,000 more than four years ago. The electorate is largely voting red, for the Social Democrats and the Left Party.

Henrik Ekengren Oscarsson, professor of political science, tells state radio that at the same time there is a group where fewer people vote than the general population.

Malmö
In this autumn's election, almost every fourth first-time voter has a foreign background. In Malmö, however, the proportion is significantly higher, where almost every second voter has a foreign background, highest in the country.

With a couple of elections ahead, the same situation will prevail in Stockholm and a few more years later throughout the country.

Red dominates
