The first monkeypox infections occurred in Germany in May, and more than 130 cases are now known. The Stiko now recommends vaccination for risk groups.

In view of the increasing number of monkeypox cases in Germany, the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) considers vaccination for risk groups to be sensible. This affects the following groups:
People aged 18 and over who have had close physical contact with infected people
Personnel in laboratories with unprotected contact with contaminated samples,
homosexual men with changing partners.
Two doses of vaccine against monkeypox needed
The smallpox vaccine Imvanex , which is approved in the EU, is available for vaccination, Stiko said. The recommendation initially went into the prescribed commenting procedure as a draft resolution.

Since the smallpox vaccine is only available to a limited extent for the time being, Stiko recommends initially offering it to people who are particularly at risk of infection. The basic immunization consists of two doses of vaccine 28 days apart . Those who have been vaccinated against smallpox in the past only need one dose.
More than 130 monkeypox cases detected
Monkeypox first appeared in Germany in May. According to the Robert Koch Institute, 131 monkeypox cases from ten federal states were reported by Thursday. The virus infection has been detected particularly frequently in Berlin, more than half of the known cases were reported from the capital. All cases recorded so far in Germany therefore concern men who have sex with men.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Sunday, the disease has been detected in around 30 countries outside of Africa where the virus does not otherwise circulate. There are more than 1,000 cases.
Monkeypox: Low risk to the general public
Monkeypox is considered a less serious disease compared to smallpox, which has been eradicated since 1980. According to the RKI, the pathogen is usually transmitted from person to person through close physical contact. Experts assume that the outbreak can be contained. The risk to the general public is still considered to be low.
Symptoms (including fever and skin rash, for example) usually go away on their own within a few weeks, but can lead to medical complications and, in very rare cases, death in some people.
