DOMESTIC. Citizens of EU countries closest to Sweden hear most about problems related to immigration and crime in the country - and have a more negative view of Sweden.
The Swedish Institute (SI) has released a new report that examines the image of Sweden in all EU countries.
In Finland, Denmark and Estonia, among others, the respondents state that they have seen, read and heard about Sweden linked to, for example, crime and immigration to a greater extent than in other countries, which according to SI may have contributed to a larger proportion in the countries stating that their image of Sweden has deteriorated.
The country where most claim to have a negative image of Sweden is Denmark, followed by Hungary and Finland.
"Crime and violence" is the theme that the largest proportion of respondents in Denmark, Finland and Estonia now associate with Sweden.
In countries further away, unsurprisingly, the picture is positive and less changed. There, Sweden is still most associated with such things as social welfare, health issues, nature and sustainability. But according to the report, there are large differences in knowledge about Sweden between the respondents.
"Knowledge about Sweden is relatively low in many EU countries, with the exception of in the Nordic neighboring countries," writes SI.
