Cracked encrypted apps have given over 2,000 years in prison

DOMESTIC. The information from the encrypted apps Encrochat, Sky and Anom has so far led to criminals being sentenced to over 2,000 years in prison, according to the latest compilation from the Police Authority.

- Access to criminals' communication in encrypted apps has meant that a large number of leading figures in organized crime have been deprived of their liberty and are in prison. Our international cooperation and new technology are significant in our work to access serious criminals, says National Police Chief Anders Thornberg in a statement.

The compilation made by the National Operations Department (NOA) shows that sentences that can be traced to information that emerged from the encrypted apps have led to a total of 2,010 prison years. The police have had access to information of this type since the summer of 2020.

- As we have stated before, we have a particularly serious situation when it comes to serious crime in criminal environments. The police authority is facing major challenges together with other authorities and actors, in the work of reversing the development, says Anders Thornberg.
