Space enthusiasts have another reason to look up starting tonight. The Flower Moon will be peaking this evening and last through tomorrow. Cosmic events have been in full swing this year. From a rare total eclipse to epic meteor showers and near country-wide Northern Lights, we’ve had much to look forward to. Over the summer, we will have a planetary parade and will likely have more chances to see the Aurora Borealis. But tonight, the stunning May full moon, also called the Flower Moon, will shine bright. The Farmer’s Almanac began naming the full moons in the 1930s, and we’ve kept with that tradition. The names largely come from Native American tribes, but sometimes they originate from the Colonial Americans. The Flower Moon earned its name because of the abundant flora buds that bloom during the month. Henry David Thoreau helped make Flower Moon mainstream by referring to it in his essay titled Thoreau and the American Indians. May’s full moon is also referred to as the Egg Laying Moon, Frog Moon, and Moon of the Shedding Ponies. If you would like to get the best view of the lunar event, check the sky on May 22 at 7:40 PM—that is when it will appear the largest.
