FOREIGN. Giorgia Meloni, who is described in the Swedish media as "post-fascist" and "right-wing extremist", wins big in Sunday's Italian election, according to a first polling station survey.

According to Rai's polling station survey, Giorgia Meloni's party Brothers of Italy receives 22-26 percent of the vote and her right-wing coalition looks set to gain a large advantage over the left.

So it looks like Italians have voted in the most right-wing government since Mussolini.

If she forms a government, Giorgia Meloni will be the country's first female prime minister.

Meloni's success has terrified liberals within the EU. Days before the election , European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen threatened to give Italy the same treatment as Hungary if the Italians voted for a right-wing government.
