A local politician in Värmland was caught for stealing a shelf from Ikea. The furniture cost SEK 699, but now the politician has to pay close to SEK 30,000 instead. The woman defends herself by saying that it is the Police Agency that is pushing a "political agenda" against her.
It was on June 22 this year that 52-year-old Hèléne Agdén, a member of the Säffle municipal board, was reported to the police for the theft of the "Kallax" shelf at Ikea in Karlstad.
Agdén, who represents the Health Care Party in Värmland and holds several political positions , went through the cash register where she scanned goods worth SEK 805. The incident was captured by the store's surveillance camera, where the politician is seen neglecting to scan the shelf that was also on the shopping cart.
A attacks the investigator
The politician defends herself by saying that she was stressed at the time at the checkout. She did not react to the low price, but it was only when she received a letter from the police that she must have realized that she had not paid for the shelf. But also that the publisher tries to "put her there".
- I suspect that the civilian investigator who interrogated me had a political agenda to put me there, against the background of my political mission. I have been subjected to a hate campaign in the media because of these accusations and it has affected me enormously, the politician said at the trial, according to the Säffle newspaper.
The shelf became expensive
Värmland District Court does not believe Hèléne Agdén's explanations and states that it should have been noticed that she had a large shelf on the cart. On Monday, the court announced that she will be sentenced for petty theft. The court considers that the penalty of 80 daily fines of SEK 370 (SEK 29,60 is a reasonable penalty.
The politician must bear his own legal costs.
