OPEN-FACED SLOPPY JOES
I don’t think there is anything quite like good ole Sloppy Joes. I just love them. It is a meal that is so much a part of my childhood. And I like to have a little fun making different versions of the traditional Sloppy Joe. This one has a BBQ twist and my family goes crazy for them! This is a quick little recipe that is perfect for a weeknight meal. The garlic Texas Toast really adds such great flavor and texture! If you’re a huge Texas Toast fan, be sure to check out my Chicken Parmesan Pizzas recipe. That one uses garlic Texas toast as a base too and is SO good!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Can I make these Sloppy Joes with more BBQ flavor? If you want more BBQ flavor, then cut the amount of ketchup in half and add in more BBQ sauce. What else can I add to my Texas Toast Sloppy Joes? Try adding some onions and diced green peppers to the sloppy joe mixture. Add some heat by adding some chopped jalapeños. Can I swap out the ground beef? Of course. You can use any meat for this: ground turkey, ground chicken or even a plant based meat substitute. Can I just use Manwich? Absolutely! Just brown the ground beef and drain excess grease and add the Manwich sauce then serve over the baked Texas Toast. You will not add any of the other ingredients unless you want to add the shredded cheddar cheese on top. How do I store leftovers? If possible, store the meat mixture and any leftover toast separately or the toast will get soggy. The meat mixture should be in an airtight container and should be kept in the fridge up to 4 days. This mixture can be frozen up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating. What’s the best way to reheat? I would suggest reheating the meat mixture on the stovetop. Add a splash of water if too thick. Reheat the toast in the oven instead of the microwave.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)
ground beef – use ground turkey or chicken if you prefer.
diced tomatoes – this is optional. We liked the additional flavor it added but it is not necessary. If you don’t like tomatoes, omit them.
ketchup
barbecue sauce – this particular sloppy Joe has a BBQ twist. If. you don’t like BBQ then just pick up a can of Manwich and make it with ground beef and add it to the top of the garlic bread. Or you can try my Homemade Sloppy Joe recipe.
Worcestershire sauce
sugar (optional) – it balances out a bit of the acidity from the tomatoes. You do not have to add it. If you have a sweet enough BBQ sauce, that will also help as well.
garlic Texas toast – I usually just buy the store brand.
shredded cheddar cheese
HOW TO MAKE TEXAS TOAST SLOPPY JOES
Brown and crumble ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Drain excess grease.
Return meat to skillet and add in diced tomatoes, ketchup, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce and sugar. Note: As I said above, the added sugar is optional in this. I think it helps balance out the acidity of the tomatoes. But if you are using a very sweet barbecue sauce then you may not feel the added sugar is necessary. Just go by taste here. Give it all a good stir until combined then cover and cook on medium heat for about 10 minutes.
While this is cooking, prepare your garlic Texas toast according to package directions. When bread is ready, spoon filling on top of bread and then sprinkle with shredded cheese. The cheese should melt from the heat of the sloppy Joe mixture.
