Sweden increasingly corrupt - worst ranking in ten years

When Transparency International presents its latest corruption index for 2022, Sweden gets the worst ranking in over a decade and is the worst in Scandinavia.

In this year's survey , Denmark comes in first place and is thus the country in the world with the least perceived corruption. In a shared second place comes Finland and New Zealand, followed by Norway. In fourth place is Sweden together with Singapore.

- This declining trend that has been and that you end up at the lowest level just this year speaks more in the direction of what we have seen since 2012. We have also seen some things that have happened in Swedish society that affect perceived corruption in the public sector , says Ulrik Åshuvud, chairman of Transparency International Sweden, to TT .

Åshuvud singles out the issue of party funding and unauthorized anonymous contributions as one of the things that stood out most negatively when looking at the view of the Swedish democratic system, the parties' credibility and citizens' trust in elected officials.

New situation
According to Transparency International Sweden, issues relating to, for example, procurement are one of the major Swedish risk areas, and issues around embezzlement and conflicts of interest are important to follow more carefully, he believes.

At the same time, Åshuvud notes that the situation today is completely different.

- The unauthorized influence looks completely different today than it did ten years ago.

At the bottom of the list is Somalia, followed by Syria and South Sudan.
