Fria Tider reported at the end of February that Tunisian President Kais Saied warned that unnamed foreign actors were trying to replace the Arab population in the country.
- The unspoken goal of the successive waves of illegal immigration is for Tunisia to be considered a purely African country that has no connection to the Arab and Islamic nations, he said.
About 300 Ivorians and Malians left Tunisia on March 4 and returned to their home countries. The embassies that organized the flights home claim that their citizens are being attacked after the president's speech. Other African embassies are also reportedly flying their citizens out of the country.
According to French newspaper La Croix, Saied's speech sparked "a wave of attacks against sub-Saharan Africans", who are now reportedly fleeing the country in droves.
Saied has made a series of immigration-critical statements in recent weeks. On February 21, the president said that illegal immigrants from sub-Saharan African countries were a source of "violence and crime" and part of a "criminal enterprise" aimed at "changing the demographic composition" of the country. According to Kais Saied, this immigration must be stopped immediately.
