Another left-wing country wants state euthanasia

FOREIGN. Portugal's parliament - where socialists and communists control 210 out of 230 seats - has approved a law allowing state euthanasia.


Portugal's parliament has approved a law that allows euthanasia in special cases.

The proposal means that the left-wing country wants to turn its back on Canada, where nowadays more than 10,000 die in state euthanasia every year.

It is the fourth time parliament has approved euthanasia in three years, but so far President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has vetoed the liberal legislation.

Now de Sousa has a week to reject or approve the new law. The idea is that it will enter into force in the autumn.
