In 2013, 29-year-old Swedish citizen Abdirahman Shukri Mohamed traveled to Syria to join the Islamic State terrorist group. There he also married an underage girl whom he systematically molested. Now he is being sentenced in a Swedish court.

The marriage between the girl and the "IS Swede", who Expressen calls Abdirahman Shukri Mohamed with a Somali immigrant background, took place in Raqqa with the girl's older brother as the so-called legal representative. The girl was then raped at least 100 times.

A few days ago, the district court's verdict was confirmed in the Court of Appeal regarding several serious rapes but also forced marriage, which meant that the sentence was increased from eight years and ten months in prison to ten years.

In the judgment, the Court of Appeal writes that when assessing the penalty value for the total crime, it is the large number of serious rapes against children that was of decisive importance.

The court of appeals justifies the verdict of forced marriage with reference to the girl's vulnerability in IS-ruled Syria, plus the fact that her chances of getting out of the country on her own were very small.

Particular ruthlessness and crudeness
The girl told the district court that it would be an advantage to get married because then it would be easier to get out of Syria. Getting married was also something she had been persuaded and influenced to do for a long time.

The Court of Appeal follows the district court's line that Abdirahman Shukri Mohamed showed "special recklessness and brutality" when he took advantage of the girl's vulnerable situation. He has also used violence, coercion and threats of violence, which has made the girl ultimately see it as pointless to try to fight back.

He himself denies any crime.
