The Koran is to be burned in Stockholm this afternoon

DOMESTIC. The police have granted permission to burn a Koran outside Stockholm's mosque at Medborgarplatsen in Stockholm at 1:30 p.m. today.

- We will burn the Koran. We will say: wake up Sweden, says Salwan Momika, who applied for the permit, to TT.

Momika, an immigrant from Iraq, is one of those who were previously denied permission to burn Korans in Stockholm.

Earlier this year, Säpo and the police effectively banned Koran burnings, citing the threat to Sweden and "Swedish interests". Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had then said that he would not allow Sweden to join NATO as long as Koran burnings were allowed.

Courts, however, later overturned the police's decision to deny permission for Koran burnings.

A big eid celebration is going on in the mosque with a large number of visitors. The police have called in reinforcements from all over the country, according to TV4.
