Gang smashed the face of a Pride man in Västerås

DOMESTIC. An LGBTQ man was severely abused by a so-called youth gang in Regnbågsparken in Västerås during Västerås Pride on Thursday evening. The incident has been heavily downplayed in the media and mostly led to local notices.

- A group of guys took the right to express their hatred towards the LGBTQ movement, says Lotta Janhager, who sits on the board of Västerås Pride, to P4 Västmanland.

According to Janhager, it started with the gang "taking the right to express their hatred of the LGBTQ movement by using the flag inappropriately".

Two people intervened against the men and were then attacked. One of them, a 45-year-old man, was brutally beaten and suffered facial fractures.

- He will have a long and difficult time ahead of him, says Lotta Janhager.

Two teenagers between the ages of 15 and 17 were arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a hate crime motive.

According to Lotta Janhager, it is "younger men and boys" who are behind the attacks against the festival.

"The hate crime was preceded by insults and threats and by our banners being torn down on several occasions both during the night and tonight," writes Västerås Pride.

Pride flag "peeped on"
The festival was also vandalized during the night of Saturday, writes Pride Västerås on Facebook.

"The portal flag has been pulled down and thrown in the garbage, people have entered our tent and knocked things over, destroyed and thrown our things in the trash cans. Today is family day Rainbow Park."

Trans activist Johannes Edenteg tells P4 Västmanland that a rainbow flag was "peeped on".
