Is Our Rapidly Evolving Society Outpacing Human Biology?
The idea that human biology may struggle to keep pace with the rapid changes of modern society has recently been highlighted by an evolutionary biologist. Across the globe, mental health issues are surging, with healthcare systems struggling to meet the growing demand for psychiatric care.
This surge in mental health raises the question: what is driving this widespread phenomenon?
One compelling theory suggests that the rapid evolution of society may be outpacing human biological adaptation, leaving us ill-prepared to cope with the complexities of modern life. This idea was recently echoed by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins.
“Many people do worry that the pace of change is such that we are no longer well-adapted to live in it,” Dawkins said during a discussion on the TRIGGERnometry podcast. “This is a worry.”
He went on to explain that, “Certainly, the rate at which we are evolving genetically is minuscule compared to the rate at which we are evolving non-genetically, culturally.”
Dawkins also suggested that much of the mental health crisis could stem from the constantly shifting and unpredictable nature of our environment, something that starkly contrasts with the more stable conditions our ancestors experienced.
However, despite acknowledging these concerns, Dawkins remains skeptical about whether this is the sole explanation for rising mental health issues.
“Actually, I think it’s amazing how resilient we are,” he noted. “We do seem to, most of us, manage to cope pretty well with the astonishing rate of change in my lifetime.”
Dawkins expressed more direct concerns with other aspects of human technology’s impact on evolution.
“The internet is a huge change, it’s gigantic change,” he noted. “We’ve become adapted to it with astonishing rapidity.”
“If we lost electricity, if we suddenly lost the technology we’re used to,” Dawkins worried, humanity might not be able to eve “begin” to adapt in time, without great social upheaval and death.
As the world continues to evolve at breakneck speed, the question remains: is this rapid change a key factor behind the mental health crisis, or are other forces at play?
