Wounds on the finger ended with amputated legs
Published 100 AM
The man sought care with a fever, body aches and a small wound on a finger. The following day he was forced to amputate both lower legs and the finger. Now one wonders if the process went right.
It was at the beginning of the year that the man in his 50s sought care at a health center with mild symptoms. Since a couple of days back, he also had a small wound on a finger. The wound was judged not to be infected and a culture showed that the inflammation marker was very low.

The man was booked in at a new time the following day for a follow-up check when a new sample was taken. This time several vital parameters were affected and the inflammation marker was significantly elevated and the man was sent to hospital.
In the hospital he developed toxic shock syndrome, which is believed to be due to the wound where yellow staphylococcus was found, and acute kidney failure. The latter could be treated successfully with dialysis, but at the same time it was assessed that amputation of both lower legs and a finger was required.
Ivo notification
The case has now been reported to the Inspectorate for Care and Care, Ivo, and the man has stated that at the first visit he felt too ill to question the doctor's assessment. In retrospect, however, he and a relative have considered whether he should have been sent to the hospital immediately after the first visit to the health center.
According to Läkartidningen, the same question must also have been discussed among the nursing staff.
"Red-triaged patients can be considered to be sent to hospital even without first consulting a consultant doctor at the hospital," says the report to Ivo.
