The government wants to place inmates in prisons abroad

FOREIGN. The Tidö parties want to rent prison places abroad to solve the lack of places in Swedish prisons. This method is already used by Denmark, which sends criminals to prisons in controversial Kosovo.


Due to full capacity in the Swedish prisons and planned toughening of sentences, the Correctional Service estimates that the number of prison places will need to be doubled in the coming years.

However, Norway's system faced criticism for making visits from relatives more difficult and violating so-called human rights.

It is the country where the prison is located that has jurisdiction over the prisoners, which led to problems in protecting the criminals from so-called degrading treatment.

The government is now taking a closer look at the legal and practical conditions for implementing this proposal.
